Brake Operator

 Summary of Responsibilities
  • This position is responsible for basic set-up and forming.
  • Difference from lower level position
  • Ability to make minor adjustments to machines as directed by the Brake Lead, and knowing what some of
    the duties are before being asked to do them. Beginning use of “ k” factors. Use shop math to perform
    simple part “ back-checks”.

  • Perform duties as assigned by the Brake Lead.
  • Develop operator skills.
  • Run out set ups that have been proven, and make minor changes in tooling and machine controller to maintain tolerance on very specific dimensions, as assigned by the Brake Lead.
  • Know how to measure dimensions with dial calipers, squares, and protractors.
  • Clean department when needed. This can be anything from sweeping, mopping, and wiping down the
  • Help higher-level operators to stay busy by assisting them with material handling, or assisting them
    with large parts.
  • Move as directed by the Brake Lead to other areas of shop as the workload dictates.
  • Helps to keep Brake Department area clean and orderly.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Interacts with Brake Operator Trainees, other Operators, and Brake Lead as a team. Frequently interacts
with Quality department and occasionally with other Supervisors.

Decision Making

Exercises proper judgment referring all decision making regarding a print or set-up deviation to the Brake
Lead or Shift Supervisor.


Receives direction from the Brake Lead. May receive direction from other department Leads, Shift Supervisors or Managers 

Education and Experience
  • Requires 1-year working experience in a precision sheet metal environment with a minimum of
    6months as a Brake Operator.
  • Requires the ability to read and understand written documents.
    Knowledge / Skills
  • Requires the ability to read and understand written documents.
  • Ability to visually differentiate between metal types such as aluminum and steel.
  • Know how to use dial calipers, squares and protractor.
  • Know how to use a calculator, and basic arithmetic, such as addition subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Must know basic third angle projection as it pertains to print interpretation, and understand most basic print call outs and notes.

Physical Requirements

Physical Requirements: Most assigned tasks for this position may involve “ Medium Work”, as defined
below. The hiring authority may review the applicant’ s physical ability based on the specific tasks to be
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force
frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
